What is Rosacea and what are the symptoms?

Rosacea is a skin condition that affects parts of the face. Commonly called Acne Rosacea because it can look similar to acne, however, it is a different condition.

What causes Rosacea?

Unknown. Different factors may be involved. However, none of these factors have been definitively proven to be the cause.

Rosacea Symptoms:

  • Frequent flushing leaving the skin red and uncomfortable. This maybe the only symptom in the early stages.
  • Redness (erythema); it may look like sunburn or a harsh reaction to a topical application.
  • Small lumpy red spots (papules) and small cysts (pustules) on the face. This is where a diagnosis is often interpreted as acne.
  • Telangiectasia on the face; these are small, broken blood vessels that are transparent though the skin is given a rough, red appearance.

What are common treatments for Rosacea?

There is no permanent cure for for Rosacea. There is nothing you can do to prevent Rosacea from starting. However, treatments can ease the symptoms. The treatments used may vary, depending on what symptoms may develop. Treatment may need to be adjusted over time depending on your response to treatments, and if you develop different symptoms.

Take Care:

  1. Avoid strong sunlight to the face. Sunlight is thought to make symptomsworse. Use sun block cream on the face, with a high protection (30 or higher and with ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) protection.
  2. Wear a hat that throws a shade over the face to protect it from direct sunlight.
  3. Avoid extremes of temperature (in particular, excessive heat), alcoholic drinks, strenuous exercise, stressful situations, sunlight, spicy food and hot drinks. If any of these seem to trigger bouts of flushing or make the flushing worse, take precaustions to avoid them or be proactive and sensible.
